Before You Calculate

Use the current pool volume and readings taken from the same pool at about the same time. Enter total alkalinity as ppm as CaCO3, enter cyanuric acid (CYA) in ppm, and match the selected chemical and active ingredient percentage to the product label.

The calculator supports anhydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. Sodium carbonate is generally the better choice when the main goal is to raise pH. Sodium bicarbonate is generally used to raise total alkalinity and may produce only limited pH movement.

Choose the target pH from the site operating plan and applicable local requirements. CDC recommends pH 7.0–7.8 and notes that chlorine becomes less effective as pH rises, especially above 8.0.[1]

Understand The Estimate

The result shows the product amount and the two water readings most affected by the adjustment.

Estimated addition The dry product amount calculated for the entered pool volume and label strength.
Estimated pH The estimated pH after the product is fully mixed.
TA increase The amount of total alkalinity the selected product adds.
Estimated TA The current total alkalinity plus the estimated increase.

The estimate assumes full mixing at the entered temperature, no immediate carbon dioxide exchange with the air, and product strength that matches the label. It uses pH, total alkalinity, CYA, and temperature together. Borates, phosphates, unusual salt levels, and other water additives can reduce its accuracy.

When PoolKit Warns Or Stops

PoolKit warns when the target pH is above 8.00 or estimated total alkalinity is above 180 ppm. Those warnings reflect the CDC pH guidance and the Model Aquatic Health Code Annex, which identifies 60–180 ppm as an ideal total alkalinity range for public aquatic venues.[1][2]

PoolKit also calls attention to an alkalinity increase of 50 ppm or more and a dry dose of 10 lb or more. These warnings are PoolKit caution prompts, not regulatory or safe-dose limits. Follow the permitted site procedure and retest before continuing.

PoolKit does not show a dose when reaching the target pH would add more than 500 ppm of total alkalinity. This is a calculator limit, not a recommended increase, a safe-dose allowance, or an MAHC limit. Verify the readings and reassess the target and correction before dosing.

The calculator accepts targets as high as 8.60, but that input limit is not operating guidance. Use the site target and applicable local requirements; CDC's recommended range remains 7.0–7.8.[1]

Apply The Site Procedure And Retest

Follow the product label, local requirements, and the facility’s feed-system or permitted manual-addition procedure. When staged manual addition is permitted, circulate, retest pH and total alkalinity, and calculate again from the new readings before adding more.
