Match the acid strength and density to the product, review the expected alkalinity loss, and follow the label and site procedure before any addition.
Before You Calculate
Use current pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid (CYA), temperature, and pool volume readings from the same water. Enter total alkalinity as ppm as CaCO3. Choose the pH target from the site operating plan and applicable local requirements. CDC recommends pH 7.0–7.8 and notes that chlorine becomes less effective as pH rises, especially above 8.0.[1]
Match the selected product, active ingredient percentage, and liquid density to the actual label or safety data sheet. Liquid dose depends on both strength and density. Dry acid uses weight, so density is not used. Never assume that two containers sold as “muriatic acid” or “pH Down” have the same composition.

PoolKit starts with three common field entries: 31.45% hydrochloric acid at 9.66 lb/gal, reduced-strength 14.5% hydrochloric acid at 8.95 lb/gal, and 93.2% sodium bisulfate. Their purpose is to convert the calculated acid requirement into liquid volume or dry weight. They are starting values, not preferred strengths or specifications for every product.
Before calculating, replace the active ingredient percentage and, for liquid acid, density with the values for the container in use. If the label or SDS does not identify the selected active ingredient and the information needed by the calculator, do not use that preset.
Understand The Estimate
Every supported acid lowers both pH and total alkalinity.
The estimate uses pH, total alkalinity, CYA, temperature, pool volume, product strength, and—when liquid—density. It assumes full mixing with no immediate carbon dioxide exchange. Borates, phosphates, unusual salinity, product additives, and continuing aeration can reduce its accuracy.
When PoolKit Warns Or Stops
The target must be lower than the current pH. The calculator will not accept a target below 6.80 and warns below 7.20. These are PoolKit checks, not operating targets; CDC recommends pH 7.0–7.8.[1]
A modeled total alkalinity decrease of 40 ppm or more, a liquid dose of 2 qt or more, or a dry dose of 5 lb or more triggers a staging warning. These warnings are PoolKit caution prompts, not regulatory or safe-dose limits. An estimated total alkalinity below 50 ppm also warns because it is already below the MAHC ideal range of 60–180 ppm for public aquatic venues.[2]
PoolKit does not show a dose when the target would require more than a 300 ppm total alkalinity decrease. This is a calculator limit, not a recommended decrease, a safe-dose allowance, or an MAHC limit. Verify the readings and reassess the target and treatment plan.
Handle Acid Safely
Acid can cause serious injury and can release toxic gas if mixed with chlorine. Only trained personnel should handle pool chemicals. Read the entire label and SDS, use the specified PPE and ventilation, measure carefully, and never mix acid with chlorine or another pool chemical. Pre-dissolve only when the product label directs it, using the method on that label.[3]
Hydrochloric acid is corrosive and can injure the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.[4] Calculator output is not an instruction to bypass a chemical feeder, add acid with bathers present, or depart from the adopted local code, emergency plan, or site procedure.
Apply The Site Procedure And Retest
Follow the product label, local requirements, and the facility’s feed-system or permitted manual-addition procedure. When staged manual addition is permitted, circulate and retest pH and total alkalinity before deciding whether more acid is required. If aeration or carbon dioxide loss is driving pH upward, pH may rise again after the immediate correction.
